Product Details of the HPE 877988-B21

The 877988-B21 HPE 4TB MLC PCI Express 3.0 x4 NVMe Hot SwapRead Intensive U.2 Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) is a high-performancestorage device designed for use in enterprise-level servers and storagesystems. It provides fast and reliable storage for data-intensive applicationsand workloads, such as databases, virtualization, and high-performancecomputing. In this article, we will explain in detail the features and benefitsof this SSD, as well as its specifications and compatibility.

Specifications

The HPE 4TB MLC PCI Express 3.0 x4 NVMe Hot Swap ReadIntensive U.2 Internal Solid State Drive has a capacity of 4 terabytes (TB) anduses the NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) protocol, which is designedspecifically for SSDs to provide faster access to data. It also supports theU.2 form factor, which is a newer and smaller version of the traditional2.5-inch form factor used in hard disk drives (HDDs). The drive is connected tothe server or storage system using a PCI Express 3.0 x4 interface, whichprovides high bandwidth and low latency for fast data transfers.

Read-Intensive Workloads

This SSD is designed for read-intensive workloads, whichmeans that it is optimized for applications that require fast read speeds butdo not write data as frequently. Read-intensive workloads include datawarehousing, business intelligence, and content delivery networks, amongothers. This SSD is not recommended for write-intensive workloads, whichrequire a high level of endurance and reliability due to frequent writes.

Performance

The HPE 4TB MLC PCI Express 3.0 x4 NVMe Hot Swap ReadIntensive U.2 Internal Solid State Drive provides fast read speeds of up to3,000 megabytes per second (MB/s) and write speeds of up to 1,100 MB/s. It alsohas a random read IOPS (Input/Output Operations Per Second) of up to 400,000and a random write IOPS of up to 30,000. These performance specifications makeit an ideal storage device for high-performance computing and data-intensiveapplications.

Hot Swap Support

The HPE 4TB MLC PCI Express 3.0 x4 NVMe Hot Swap ReadIntensive U.2 Internal Solid State Drive supports hot swapping, which meansthat it can be removed and replaced while the server or storage system is stillrunning. This feature allows for easy maintenance and upgrades, as well asreduced downtime and increased availability.

Reliability

This SSD is designed for high reliability and endurance, with a Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) of 2 million hours. It also has awarranty of up to 3 years, depending on the specific model and region. Thedrive also includes various features to enhance its reliability and durability, such as power loss protection, which helps to prevent data loss in the event ofa power failure.

FAQs

What causes NVMe SSD to fail? ›

Reasons for NVMe SSD Failure

Overheating: If your drive overheats consistently, it may lead to low performance, data corruption, and eventual drive failure. Firmware Issues: Outdated or corrupted firmware can cause issues with the functionality of the drive. Neglecting firmware updates can lead to drive failure.

How much faster is NVMe over SSD? ›

NVMe SSDs. For the fastest data transfer speeds available, look no further than the NVMe SSD. Through its Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) bus, NVMe SSDs can achieve transfer speeds of up to 20 gigabytes per second (Gbps)—more than three times the speed of a SATA SSD.

Do NVMe drives slow down when full? ›

The answer is yes. SSD will run slower if you fill it up. According to a survey, the write speed of an SSD will obviously slow down when the used space accounts for more than 75%.

How fast is the NVMe PCIe Gen3 x4 2280 m 2 connector? ›

➤ High-speed NVMe PCIe Gen3 x4 M. 2 Interface:combine the next-gen PCIe Gen 3x4 NVMe interface with the latest V-NAND technology and a newly enhanced Phoenix controller to achieve fearless read/write speeds up to 3,500/2,700 MB/s, approximately 30 percent faster than the previous generation.

What is the life expectancy of an NVMe SSD? ›

="google"In the market, there are many different types of SSD, and they are various in lifespan. However, on normal wear and tear, most SSDs like SATA SSD, M. 2 SSD, and PCIe SSD have a similar lifespan - about 3-5 years on average, while the superior SSD type, NVME SSD, has an average lifespan of 10 years.

What is the most common SSD failure? ›

A common cause of drive failure for an SSD is overheating. Raised temperatures can cause the controllers and the chips in it to fail and the SSD to stop working. This could happen due to its own operation or because it's placed around other components that generate heat, such as tightly placed in a laptop.

What are the disadvantages of NVMe SSD? ›

Not cost-effective at storing large volumes of data. NVMe is more expensive based on storage capacity when compared with already well-established spinning drives. Typically used with the M.

Which is better, SSD or NVMe? ›

Is NVMe faster than SATA? Technically, yes. Modern motherboards use SATA III which has a max throughput of 600MB/s while NVMe drives provide speeds up to 3,500MB/s. The level of performance is much greater than SATA SSDs regardless of form factor.

Do NVMe speeds really matter? ›

Drive Speed

2 drives and 2.5 inch SSDs provide the same level of speed, so to gain a performance increase, you will have to opt for the NVMe-connected drives. While NVMe SSDs are going to be much faster than SATA drives, you may also need to upgrade your processor to keep up or you may experience worse performance.

Can I put a gen 4 m 2 in a gen 3 slot? ›

Placing a Gen4 NVMe SSD into a Gen3 slot will indeed "utilize the gen 3 slot at its max" whilst doing nothing to harm the Gen4 drive.

How much faster is Gen 4 NVMe than Gen 3? ›

Samsung's PCIe NVMe Gen 4 SSDs are twice as fast as Gen 3 SSDs. For example, the Samsung 990 PRO, an internal PCIe 4.0 x4 SSD for PCs, features sequential read/write speeds of 7,450/6,900 MB/s, which is 2.1 times faster than a PCI 3.0 SSD and 13.3 times faster than a SATA SSD.

What is the max speed of PCIe Gen 4 NVMe? ›

PCIe 4.0 has a 16 GT/s data rate, compared to its predecessor's 8 GT/s. In addition, each PCIe 4.0 lane configuration supports double the bandwidth of PCIe 3.0, maxing out at 32 GB/s in a 16-lane slot, or 64 GB/s with bidirectional travel considered.

What causes a faulty SSD? ›

The technologies connected to the SSD that enable it to interface with other systems are susceptible to the same faults as other controllers. Power outages and surges can cause the drive to fail entirely or present unusual symptoms, like inaccurately reporting the amount of free space.

Can you recover data from a dead NVMe SSD? ›

NVMe SSD data recovery is feasible. You need to find a data recovery solution with specific knowledge of working with flash memory if your M. 2 NVMe SSD technology has failed.

Can M2 SSDs fail? ›

While it's true that flash drives, SD cards, and M2 drives all have NAND flash memory, they're still prone to failure. Like hard drives, solid state drives will, too, eventually fail.

Why did my SSD suddenly stop working? ›

SSD failure can be caused by a variety of factors, but most obvious are age, physical damage, and heat. The latter two factors have a much smaller impact on SSD than a hard disk drive. But age can cause both SSD and HDD to eventual failure.
