Allstate Review Summary

Allstate is a pretty good insurance company, earning a rating of 2.9/5 from WalletHub editors, good customer reviews, and above-average ratings from organizations such as the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and J.D. Power. Allstate is perhaps best known for its auto insurance policies, but the company also offers coverage for your home, business, special events and more.

Allstate car insurance should be at the top of the list for experienced drivers with clean driving records, especially those looking to bundle multiple insurance products with one company. However, individuals who have just started driving or who have poor driving records might want to look elsewhere, due to higher premium costs for these drivers than from some of Allstate’s top competitors.

Allstate scored well in this category given the broad range of insurance options it offers, not to mention the availability of savings for bundling multiple policies. Below, we’ll look more into how Allstate measures up when it comes to car insurance, as that’s its most popular type of coverage.

For starters, Allstate auto insurance offers all the standard coverage options that drivers would expect: bodily injury liability, property damage liability, uninsured/underinsured motorist, collision, and comprehensive. Auto insurance policies from Allstate also include several complimentary built-in benefits. For instance, the Claim Satisfaction Guarantee gives you a credit on your premium if you’re not happy with your claim service experience, and Allstate maintains a network of preferred auto repair shops to help ensure policyholders receive quality repairs. Allstate policyholders also have the chance to earn reward points for safe driving through the Allstate Rewards® program.

Allstate customers can further customize their auto policies with supplemental options that provide enhanced protections and benefits.

Supplemental Allstate Car Insurance Coverage Options:

  • Emergency Road Service: Covers towing, tire repairs, jump starts, locksmith services, and fuel delivery. Policyholders who choose not to add this coverage can still call for roadside help through the Good Hands Rescue app – a pay-per-use service. Customers can also upgrade their roadside coverage to the Allstate Motor Club, which features exclusive benefits such as travel discounts, trip interruption protection, retail savings, legal defense and more.
  • Rental Reimbursem*nt: Covers the cost of a rental car if your vehicle is in the repair shop due to an accident.
  • Accident Forgiveness: Protects you from a rate increase after an at-fault accident.
  • Safe Driving Bonus®: Gives customers a check from Allstate for every six months they remain accident-free. Allstate will also take $100 off your collision deductible when you add this feature to your policy.
  • Deductible Rewards®: Helps to reduce your deductible by $100 each year (up to $500) that you remain accident-free. Receive a $100 credit off your deductible instantly when you sign up for this benefit.
  • New Car Replacement: Allstate will replace your new car (less than 2 model years old) if you completely total it in an accident.
  • Sound System Insurance: Covers the cost of audio equipment in the vehicle in the event of an accident or theft.

The availability and details of the coverage/benefit options listed above vary by state. If you’re not sure how much coverage you need, Allstate’s Bumper-to-Bumper Basics® tool can help give you an idea of what coverage levels would be best for you.

Specialty Types of Allstate Car Insurance Policies:

  • Allstate Milewise Insurance for the occasional driver seeking a more budget-friendly insurance policy. This pay-per-mile option allows drivers to purchase insurance based on how much they drive on a daily basis. Your rate comprises two components: a base rate (which is calculated by factoring in your age, vehicle type and driving history) and a miles-driven rate.
Milewise is only available in the District of Columbia and the following states: Delaware, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia.
  • Classic Car Insurance for owners of race cars, antique tractors, old military vehicles, and other classic/collector vehicles. The classic car insurance policy is offered by a third-party provider, Hagerty Insurance Agency.
  • Allstate Ride for Hire® Insurance for extra protection on your personal auto policy that costs as little as $15-20 per year. It’s designed to cover any gaps in your personal policy while you’re driving for a personal transportation company. Allstate’s rideshare insurance is not available in all states.
  • Allstate Mexico Tourist Auto Insurance for covering liability, medical payments, collision damage and more while you’re driving in Mexico. Allstate partners with a third-party provider to offer this coverage, and drivers must have a valid U.S. license and be at least 21 years old. Younger drivers may be subject to an additional service fee.

Allstate also offers insurance policies for motorcycles, boats, motorhomes, snowmobiles, and ATVs.

Allstate Discounts

Category Rating: 60% (3 out of 5)

  • Multi-policy discount
  • New car discount
  • Anti-lock brake discount
  • Anti-theft discount
  • EZ Pay Plan® discount
  • Allstate eSmart® discount
  • FullPay® discount
  • Early Signing®
  • Responsible Payer
  • Safe Driving Club
  • Smart student discount
  • Allstate Drivewise

While Allstate offers quite a few discounts, its list of options is shorter than what many of its top competitors have available, especially in terms of auto insurance discounts. Allstate received an average score in this category as a result. Also, it’s worth noting that the availability and eligibility criteria for these discounts vary by state.

Allstate Transparency

Category Rating: 100% (5 out of 5)

Key information is easy to find on Allstate’s website and mobile app, so it gets a good score in the transparency department from WalletHub. You can also call a live customer service representative 24/7 at 800-ALLSTATE (800-255-7828) to get answers to your questions.

Bottom Line

Allstate is a pretty good insurance company overall, especially for customers who feel comfortable managing their claims themselves on the company’s website or mobile app. Allstate also has 24/7 claims support by phone, as well as a nationwide network of agents, so you’re just a call away from getting the help you need with your insurance policy.

All in all, Allstate scores well in terms of customer service, coverage options and claims processing. However, it could make improvements in the discounts and transparency departments.
